I don’t know about you but when I was in school and a teacher gave us a few months to work on a project most of my peers and I would immediately file the task in the “later” part of the brain.
There were much more important things to do at the time (such as play road hockey and climb trees). Besides, those science fair projects didn’t seem that all complicated anyways…
The weeks would pass and few of us thought much about the outstanding project until the teacher would remind everyone that the work was due by the end of the week.
Some panicked, invested considerable resources into creative excuses and begged for extensions while others (myself included) employed Jedi mind like focus (we had yet to discover caffeine and red bull wasn’t around yet) to finish the task.
Were we bad kids? Hardly… It’s human nature to procrastinate.
Oregon State put out an article titled “Six Reasons People Procrastinate” and some of the key reasons included: not knowing how to do something (that most certainly included me in science class) as well as a lack of interest and/or lack of motivation.
If you’re a business owner or sales professional you know all about procrastination.
You work hard to engage qualified clients, uncover needs and complete a proposal and…crickets.
Or perhaps the file goes quite for a few months and out of nowhere the prospect calls in a panic to execute. The process starts all over again…
What if there was a way to help you to keep your clients engaged and help them take action when they should?
Create Actionable Deadlines (& Keep Them).
There are two variables you need to fully appreciate to create urgency tied to deadlines that actually mean something to your client:
First you need to determine how much value your solution creates (in terms of savings, efficiencies, increased profits etc)
Second determine how much it “costs” (based on above) to delay taking action each day, every 30 days and each year.
If you provide a reputable product or service your value stacks up quite nicely, doesn’t it?
The amount of time wasted (procrastinating) can be measured and accounted for and incorporated into the conversation.
Business owners, decision makers and professionals all want to make smart decisions. Especially when it comes to the bottom line.
Help them by creating Actionable Deadlines and watch your business take flight!
