People play not to lose.
Every January spirits are high, goals are set and gyms are full.
For the next 30 days treadmills at my gym get more action than they’ve seen in the previous 11 months; even the "5:00am club" gets a temporary boost in members.
Come February, when the deep freeze kicks in and that bed feels so much better it’ll be back to “normal” and those of us that work out regularly the other 11 months of the year enjoy empty facilities again.
If you want something bad enough, you will do just about anything to make it happen.
The question is do you need to win?
It’s an important question to ask yourself and something that requires you to be brutally honest with yourself.
Winning means different things to different people and in my experience, I’ve found that most people are much more interested in being comfortable than winning.
Even worse…being comfortable is passed off as “winning”.
I couldn’t disagree more.
Doing enough of something to get comfortable isn’t winning. It’s surviving.
If you’re one of those rare individuals that dreams about your goals at night, playing them out in your head, and then springing up before your alarm clock to get back at it, you know what I’m talking about.
It’s not a burden. It’s not a task or a to-do item in your schedule. It’s a lifestyle.
Magic happens when you have a clear goal and when you go at it long enough the world seems to help you achieve it. People rally at your side, doors open and things get done.
The more inclusive and meaningful your goal, the higher quality people you attract to achieve it.
I’ve found that goals my team and I have set in the past (both professionally and personally) that actually got accomplished had the following 3 things in common:
1. You are exceptionally passionate about “why” you need to accomplish it.
2. It is measurable in both time and quantity.
3. It is inclusive and goes far beyond personal interests.
Winners love goals. Do your goals inspire the winner in you?
