EVERYONE WANTS TO BUILD AN EMPIRE BUT THE REAL MONEY IS IN KEEPING IT GOING.

Starters – These are the ones that are sometimes affectionately referred to as the “space cadets”.


These astronauts are always the ones with the big idea. They are fantastic dreamers; they challenge the status quo and are stubborn as heck. They have an unwavering confidence in their business and light up at any opportunity they can to talk about it. They think big and rarely take other people’s input to heart unless it’s coming from someone who’s done what they’re trying to do. What they lack in the ability to see an idea through, they make up for in charisma and charm.

If this sounds a lot like you, I recommend getting help, professional help that is.

Starters need staff or partners that understand you and your chronic allergy to paperwork. Don’t apologize for it or try to become as good as the others.

Your energy is much better spent in front of people (investors/clients) sharing your big idea.

If you’re a starter looking to bring a big idea to market you will need to learn how to slow down, think things through and clearly communicate to those on your team that can ultimately help execute the vision.


If you don’t learn how to direct and channel this energy you can still be fantastically successful despite yourself but you’re less likely to have the meaningful impact you’re looking for.


Your biggest assets are your drive, energy and vision. Your biggest challenge is to harness that raw power and create focus for yourself and your team.

Builders – If you’ve been shaking your head while reading the last few sentences thinking about that person you know that fits into the above category you might be a builder.


You’re also likely thinking about that outstanding project that ended up on your desk from him/her.

Builders are the bridge between the vision and the execution of any idea.

You connect the dots and see beyond the idea and think about what you’ll need to get there. You take abstract ideas and make them fit into the path that is set out.

You keep people engaged and show them the substance behind the marketing and goals.

You need to be patient and understanding of the Starter, especially his/her flexible logic. Starters are usually in pursuit of a moving target while you look to incorporate systems and structure to build upon.


You promote the vision internally to your team and externally to the world all while keeping an eye on the “details” like gross margins and document flow.

Your biggest assets are your ability to see the details that matter, inspire loyalty and find great people to work with.

Because you tend to be “good” at everything, your biggest challenge is to let go of tasks and responsibilities that others can do better or should be responsible in the first place.

Although Starters and Builders will not always agree, a thriving business requires a healthy respect for both types to become a great company.
