Victims & Victors

Do things happen to you or for you?

Ever since I could remember I’ve been fascinated with people and how they got to where they are. If your day to day activities involve connecting with lots of people you’ll likely agree, “people” are an interesting study.

Over the years you’ve likely met wide variety of people including the “know it all” that makes it incredibly painful to be around all the way through to the reserved businessman that owns half of town.

You’ve likely also had interactions with people that you want to model and witnessed behaviors that you’d sooner forget…or potentially save for stories with friends.

With that in mind; I decided to take some time and put together a list of some of the most common personality traits of Victors & Victims.

Whenever I catch myself falling into the second set of character traits, I know its time for some self reflection… that is if someone close to me doesn’t reign me in first.

There are people in your lives that fall squarely in either one camp or the other, the question is which of these traits do you relate most to?

Victors

  • Understand that success doesn’t just happen, its a work in progress.

  • Expect setbacks and get on with it.

  • Don’t allow toxic people into their lives.

  • Know that they don’t know it all and crave to learn.

  • Take responsibility for mistakes.

  • Praise those around them.

  • Look to work with people smarter and more successful than them.

  • Do not seek the approval of others.

Victims

  • Live with a victim mentality.

  • Blame others for their hardships.

  • Quit when tasks become difficult.

  • Expect others to fix things.

  • Pass the buck.

  • Pity themselves and commiserate with others.

  • Resist change or having to learn something new.

  • Look for the easy way out.

  • Call others lucky when they succeed.

  • Seek the approval and validation of others.

Each of us has both a Victor and Victim inside, the key is to pay attention and catch yourself when your start to suffer from that "stinking thinking".

Bruce Lee once said “ Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one”.
